US Secret Service dismantles bot farm that used over 300 SIM servers

The US Secret Service has taken down a large network of electronic devices found across the New York tristate area that was used for masking swatting calls.

The network included over 300 SIM servers and 100,000 SIM cards, discovered during a security investigation. The agency claims that the devices were capable of making anonymous threats and could also be used for more dangerous activities like disabling cell towers, disrupting emergency services, launching cyberattacks, and enabling secret communication between criminals and foreign actors.

Many of the devices were located within 35 miles of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, which is currently in session.

“While forensic examination of these devices is ongoing, early analysis indicates cellular communications between nation-state threat actors and individuals that are known to federal law enforcement,” the press release said.

The Secret Service hasn’t announced any arrests connected to the operation. The investigation is still ongoing.
