North American propane supplier Superior Plus hit with ransomware

Major natural gas supplier Superior Plus has revealed it was a target of a ransomware attack over the weekend forcing it to shut down some of its computer systems impacted by the incident.

Superior is a North American distributor and marketer of propane and distillates and related products and services, servicing over 780,000 customer locations in the U.S. and Canada.

In a statement the company said it was in the process of recovery from a breach, which resulted in some of its systems becoming infected with an unspecified ransomware strain on Sunday, December 12.

“Superior has temporarily disabled certain computer systems and applications as it investigates this incident and is in the process of bringing these systems back online,” Superior said.

The company added that it has no evidence that safety or security of any customer or other personal data has been compromised.

“Superior is committed to data safety, is taking the matter very seriously and asks its customers and partners for their patience as it seeks to remediate the situation,” the company said.

Superior Plus becomes the latest fuel supplier to suffer a ransomware attack. In May, the US energy firm Colonial Pipeline was hit by a DarkSide ransomware attack, which forced the company to shut down its fuel distribution pipeline. Colonial Pipeline ended up paying the DarkSide ransomware group $5 million in ransom to get its systems back online.
