Cyberattack halts beer production at Spain’s second-largest brewery

Computer systems of Sociedad Anónima Damm, Spain’s second-biggest brewery, were hit by a cyberattack, which forced the company to temporarily halt beer production at all of its breweries.

Damm, which has been making the world-renowned Estrella Damm lager since 1876, was targeted by hackers on Tuesday. The attack "entirely paralyzed" the plant in El Prat de Llobregat, which produces seven million hectolitres of beer a year, for a few hours, Olga Vidal, Damm's head of communications, told Reuters.

"IT services made possible a partial resumption of production and we expect to operate at 100% in the coming hours," she said.

The attack had no impact on beer deliveries made by the brewery last week. Vidal said Damm’s existing stocks were sufficient to fulfill all its deliveries to bars, supermarkets, and restaurants.

The Damm’s spokesperson did not reveal the nature of the cyber incident, nor did she say whether the ransom was demanded.
