Toronto transit system hit by a ransomware attack

The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) revealed it was hit by a ransomware attack last week that impacted some of its systems and services.

The TTC provides public transit service for up to 1.7 million people per weekday in Toronto and surrounding municipalities.

The attack took place on Thursday night, October 28, and was discovered by a TTC IT staffer who detected “unusual network activity.” TTC said in a statement that the hackers attempted to break into the agency’s network servers, however, the incident did not cause any significant disruption to transit service and the public and employees were not at risk.

Online services for communicating with vehicle operators, information platform screens, trip-planning apps, the commission’s website, an online booking portal and internal email messaging were among the affected systems, TTC said.

"The full extent of the attack is being looked into and the TTC is working with law enforcement and cybersecurity experts on the matter. The City of Toronto’s IT Services department has also been consulted," the agency said.

At the time of writing, there is no information about what ransomware gang was responsible for this attack.
